Commission official responds to concerns researchers are struggling to use ‘widening’ scheme

The European Commission intends to examine the early performance of the EU’s troubled new ‘hop-on’ scheme for supporting countries with lagging performance in the bloc’s research and innovation programme, Research Professional News can reveal.

Last month, Research Professional News reported that some organisations from ‘widening countries’ underperforming in Horizon Europe had only been able to work with existing partners using the hop-on, which was introduced to the 2021-27 iteration of the EU R&I programme to allow organisations from these countries to join ongoing projects.
