‘Diversify EU research spending to stay competitive,’ says Commission adviser

Manuel Heitor calls for broad R&D spending hikes and “transformative agenda” for Horizon Europe successor

The EU must “diversify” its research funding to stay globally competitive, the chair of a high-level group advising the bloc on how to overhaul its research and innovation programmes has told Research Europe.

Former Portuguese science minister Manuel Heitor was appointed in December to lead an expert group tasked with finding out what works well and what needs changing in the 2021-27 Horizon Europe R&I programme. Due this autumn, the work is intended to inform European Commission changes to the final years of Horizon Europe and shape the design of its successor.
