The EU invested vast sums in long-term schemes for emerging technologies. Was it worth it?
A little over 10 years ago, at the start of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, the European Commission made a big gamble.
It chose to fund a set of billion-euro, long-term projects on a small number of emerging technologies. The Future and Emerging Technologies Flagships programme was launched to address major challenges in science and technology and boost innovation in the EU.
