Europe to run half of global telescope array

The European Southern Observatory has secured a deal to manage the southern hemisphere operations of the global Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Agreement between the ESO and CTA organisations was reached on 19 December, the ESO has announced. The ESO is Europe’s intergovernmental organisation for carrying out astronomy in the southern hemisphere.

On the same day, the ESO agreed with the Chilean government that the telescope’s southern hemisphere array will be built at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert.
