Balkans choose tumour research facility

Balkan countries have unanimously agreed to establish an institute for tumour therapy and biomedical research as the major scientific facility in the region.

The decision was made at the second steering committee meeting of the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST) on 30 March in Tirana, Albania. The countries’ prime ministers will officially sign a memorandum of cooperation at the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 17 May.

The SEEIIST project is modelled on Sesame, the synchrotron light source in Jordan that brought together countries in the Middle East and Mediterranean with the intention of promoting regional peace. The Balkan countries had to decide between either a synchrotron light source or a facility for tumour therapy and research using heavy ions.
