First contact for planetary scientists

Astronomers in Europe have been given the chance to expand their horizons, with the launch of a membership organisation to promote planetary sciences.

The Europlanet Society was opened at the European Planetary Science Congress in Berlin on 20 September, the European Science Foundation announced. ESF will host the society’s management body, which will be elected at a general assembly in October, at its office in Strasbourg.

“With the launch of the Europlanet Society, we have put in place a sustainable structure to support planetary science in Europe for decades to come,” said Nigel Mason, the society’s president. “The Europlanet Society is an exciting new venture that will enable individuals and organisations involved in all aspects of planetary science to take an active role in shaping our community’s future.”
