A project to connect Europe and Latin America with an underwater fibre-optic cable is making progress, according to the European Commission.
The project is on course to provide high broadband connectivity that will boost business, scientific and cultural exchanges between the two continents by 2020, the Commission announced on 8 January. The cable will run between Portugal and Brazil, although the Commission says it aims to extend the connection to other parts of Latin America and the EU.
“Latin America and Europe have never been so closely connected: we are pleased to see this intercontinental cable becoming a reality,” four EU representatives, including the research commissioner Carlos Moedas, said in a joint statement.
