Planet-studying satellite successfully launched after delay due to technical hitch

The European Space Agency successfully launched its Cheops Characterising Exoplanets Satellite mission on 18 December, after a problem during the scheduled launch the previous day forced a delay.

The mission will be ESA’s first to study planets orbiting other suns. It will use a telescope in high Earth orbit to examine the silhouettes of distant Earth-sized planets and deduce their composition.
