Plan S expands into Middle East

The Higher Council for Science and Technology of Jordan, the country’s national umbrella funder, has joined the Plan S open-access publishing initiative.

The HCST announced on 13 March that it had joined the group of funders, called Coalition S, that have signed up to the initiative organised by the association of research funders and performers Science Europe. The council, which has an annual grants budget of about £750,000 (€879,000), is the first organisation in the Middle East to have signed up to Plan S.

“HCST make[s] it clear that the results of publicity funded research should be freely accessible to society with no barriers,” the funder said in a statement. “A decisive step towards the realisation of full open access needs to be taken now.”
