Open infrastructure initiative aims to empower academia

An initiative with global support from proponents of open research has been launched to map, draw attention to and support community-run open research infrastructures.

Those behind the Invest in Open Infrastructure initiative set out their aims in a launch statement on 14 May. They said that researchers are being failed by commercial research infrastructures that compete with, rather than complement, one another, and that IOI is intended to help solve this problem.

“The needs of today’s diverse scholarly communities are not being met by the existing largely uncoordinated scholarly infrastructure, which is dominated by vendor products that take ownership of the scholarly process and data without appropriate governance and oversight from the communities they serve,” the statement said.
