Operators hail ‘amazing’ progress on X-ray facility

The Extremely Brilliant Source, an upgraded €150-million X-ray machine at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, has been almost fully powered up a month ahead of schedule.

The EBS replaces an earlier X-ray machine on the same site and uses an unprecedented design that is now being imitated by similar X-ray sources worldwide. “It is working straight away, it is pretty amazing,” said Harald Reichert, a director of research at the ESRF.
