Orbiter will study the sun, providing a first glimpse into its poles

The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter mission to study the sun blasted off on 10 February from Florida’s Cape Canaveral, with early indications of a successful deployment.

The mission, which is led by ESA with cooperation from the United States’ space agency NASA, will investigate the solar radiation that can disrupt telecommunications and other technologies on Earth, and will enable the first imaging of the sun’s uncharted polar regions.
