European research infrastructures ‘not financially sustainable’

Commission advised to make incremental EU funding conditional on past performance

Long-term financial sustainability “remains challenging for the vast majority” of European research infrastructures, meaning funding reforms may be needed, an expert group has found.

The group was established in January 2019 specifically to look at the issue of long-term funding. It was led by Giorgio Rossi, former chair of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (Esfri) advisory body.
