Pandemic and “technical challenges” blamed for delay to construction of neutron source research facility

A two-year delay costing an estimated €550 million has been announced for the construction of the European Spallation Source, a particle accelerator research facility being built in Lund, Sweden.

The ESS said on 10 December that the delays were caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and “technical challenges”. Rather than its planned completion date of late 2025, the ESS is now expected to be fully operational in late 2027.
