As research becomes ever more data-intensive, Europe’s supercomputers are racing to keep up with demand
In spring 2023, Jesper Strøm hit a problem with his research project. Along with fellow PhD researcher Andreas Larsen Engholm, Strøm was exploring how machine learning could be used for monitoring sleep and whether it could match up to manual data collection by trained sleep specialists.
But the amount of data being produced was far too much for the computing infrastructure at Aarhus University in Denmark, where Strøm and Engholm were based, to process. Their thesis adviser suggested they look at using the Lumi supercomputer located in Kajaani, Finland, and applied for them to gain access.
