Facebook plans European research base

Facebook has announced it is to open a small research lab to study artificial intelligence in Paris.

The lab, which was announced on 2 June, will provide a space for six researchers to develop automated language and image recognition software, in collaboration with the French public research institute Inria. They will also work on machine learning techniques and live translation tools.

This will be the third such laboratory for the social-networking company and the first in Europe. It has previously established research facilities in California and New York.
