The European Patent Office has awarded innovation prizes to innovators whose inventions have helped provide solutions to societal challenges such energy efficiency and health.
A lifetime achievement award was presented to Andreas Manz, a Swiss chemist who works in nanotechnology, for his invention of the microlab chip. This technology makes it possible to conduct fast medical analyses on microchips that are just a few millimetres in size.
A research award was given to Ludwik Leibler, for his invention of vitrimers – a new class of glass-like plastics, which are completely recyclable and are suitable for use in manufacturing and electronics.
