Europe’s Joint Programming Initiative on urbanisation has said it intends to launch a joint call on the development of smart cities with research funders in China.
The initiative is one of ten JPIs set up across Europe to coordinate research across single disciplines between member states. On 15 June, following a consultation of national funding agencies, the Urban Europe JPI published a preliminary assessment of the potential to implement a joint call with China.
The report concludes that it would be both feasible and beneficial to set up such a call with China. “As the development of smart cities is a global challenge, a partnership between China and EU member states can mobilise research communities on both sides to draw on advanced concepts and technologies for China’s urbanisation,” Urban Europe said in a statement.
