€3m reward for way to ‘feel the internet’

The European Commission has launched an innovation challenge prize for the development of tactile displays to help visually impaired people sense digital information.

The prize, which launched yesterday, offers a single grant of €3 million for the submission that is best able to convey digital information in both braille and tactile graphics, to improve “access to and the understanding of” digital information.

Such technology will mainly benefit blind and visually impaired people, but could also be used in activities that require people to use their hands and eyes simultaneously, such as piloting aircraft, the Commission said.
