Airbus helicopter given green light for takeoff

The European Commission has approved €377 million of French and German state aid for the development of a helicopter by the European multinational company Airbus.

After assessing the project, the Commission announced on 19 June that the development of the Airbus X6 helicopter would “significantly contribute” to research and innovation in the EU without distorting competition in the single market.

The funding will be provided in the form of loans, with France providing €330 million over eight years and Germany €47m. Margrethe Vestager, the competition commissioner, said the funding would in turn stimulate “considerable private investment” in the project.
