The European Commission is considering devoting more funding to technology research to increase digital innovation, its vice president Andrus Ansip has said.
Ansip made the comment in a speech at the Next Generation Internet Summit in Brussels on 6 June. Although the Digital Single Market “does a lot” to support startups and innovation, "there is a lot more we could do, such as reinforcing this commitment with more funding for tech research, for example,” he said.
The Commission is “looking into this,” he added, describing technology as a “firm priority” in the EU’s next seven-year funding period. “I strongly believe in investing in startups and hi-tech research, both politically and financially: to build a new class of internet innovators, to help them grow and compete globally,” Ansip said.
