The EU’s newest member states are lagging behind other European countries on overall innovation performance, a ranking produced by the European Commission has found.
Sweden, Denmark and Finland were the EU leaders on the Commission’s Innovation Scoreboard, which was published on 20 June. The bloc’s newest recruits, Romania and Bulgaria, were the worst-performing member states and were classed as “modest innovators”.
However, it was non-EU member states that topped and tailed the ranking. Switzerland was crowned the most innovative country in Europe, while war-torn Ukraine brought up the rear.
