Commission aims to boost regional transformation

The European Commission has launched two pilot projects to help EU regions deal with the economic and social challenges posed by globalisation.

One of the projects presents the opportunity for regions that are experiencing a transition in their industries to request support from a team of Commission experts to increase their innovation capacity. The second will provide EU funding to support interregional innovation partnerships in priority topics such as big data, the bio-economy and advanced manufacturing.

In its announcement yesterday, the Commission said it will also increase its efforts to help member states establish business-friendly environments. This will include consideration of the quality and openness of public research, cooperation between businesses and universities, and worker skills sets, it said.
