A European instrument for discovering planets outside the solar system has started operating from its base in Chile.
The Multi-site All-Sky Camera (Mascara) station is located at the La Silla Observatory, on the outskirts of the Atacama Desert. The European Southern Observatory, which operates the site, announced on 19 July that the station has now achieved ‘first light’.
The station “will seek out transiting exoplanets as they pass in front of their bright parent stars”, ESO said. Its data will then be used to create a catalogue of targets for further exploration.
