Europe is not capitalising on the innovation potential of its research infrastructure, and should open it up to industry, the European Commission has proposed.
While the main role of research infrastructure is to underpin fundamental research, it has “clear potential” to foster innovation, the Commission said in a staff document published on 27 September. However, a lack of dialogue between infrastructure projects and industry, and a difference in aims are preventing this potential from being realised, it said.
“The current framework for interaction with industry is not ideal and both research infrastructures and industry do not fully perceive the reciprocal potential benefits of proactively engaging in collaboration,” the Commission said.
