The EU’s next R&D programme should fund a quantum-computing mission in addition to the €1-billion Quantum Technologies Flagship, representatives of member-state governments said at the flagship’s launch.
Several national representatives called for a quantum-technologies mission in the Horizon Europe programme, before the button had even been pushed to mark the official launch of the Quantum Technologies Flagship at a ceremony in Vienna on 29 October.
The European Commission’s top technology official Roberto Viola told researchers at the launch that, rather than being threatened by such a mission, the Quantum Technologies Flagship would expand as Horizon Europe proceeded.
