AI society launched amid competition concerns

Artificial intelligence researchers have launched a European AI society to strengthen the continent’s efforts in the field, as a report warned of an academic brain drain to global competition.

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, a network for AI research first proposed in April, took a step towards realisation on 6 December with the launch of a professional association that will build its “intellectual and physical structures”.

The formation of the society was announced in Canada at the 2018 NeurIPS conference—the leading international conference on the AI technology machine learning. In a statement, researchers involved said that Ellis would focus on “modern AI”, which relies heavily on machine-learning approaches.
