The European Commission is seeking input on why public funding should be used to fund R&D in the area of potentially disruptive, market-creating technologies.
The consultation was launched on 28 March by the Effect Project, a Horizon 2020 initiative aimed at increasing the visibility of, and discussions about, the EU’s Future and Emerging Technologies R&D funding instrument. It is hosted on the Commission’s Futurium platform for public discussion of EU policies, and closes on 15 May.
Views are being sought following a workshop at the European Parliament where arguments were developed in favour of the FET instrument to feed into the planning for the EU’s next R&D Framework programme. This produced contributions such as that there is a lack of funding for small companies in the early stages of high-risk projects and that researchers need to be given the freedom to explore “crazy ideas that can change the world”.
