EIC pilot to be expanded

The pilot phase of the EU’s nascent European Innovation Council is to be “enhanced” along the lines of the template set out in the proposals for the bloc’s 2021-27 R&D programme Horizon Europe.

The bigger pilot will launch in 2019 and expand on what has already been tested over the past year or so, the European Commission announced on 10 September. The 2019-20 work programme of the EU R&D programme Horizon 2020 will be changed accordingly.

The first phase of the EIC pilot was launched in October 2017 and brought existing funding instruments under the EIC umbrella in an effort to increase their visibility. These included: the SME Instrument, which provides funding and business coaching to small companies; the Fast Track to Innovation, which funds industry-led consortia to test prototypes; Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open, which funds consortia to explore novel technologies; and Horizon Prizes, which reward innovations addressing societal challenges.
