The European Investment Bank has made its largest ever loan in support of research, lending the Spanish government more than a billion euros.
The €1.2-billion loan will support the country’s national research and innovation plan from 2017 to 2020.
Spain secured a €625-million loan for research from the European Investment Bank in 2013 and a further €515m in 2014, both of which it combined with national funds. The 2013 loan was earmarked for public research infrastructures and organisations across Spain, while the second supported the national research plan from 2013 to 2016.
