European companies’ R&D spending ‘growing too slowly’

Big EU companies are increasing their R&D spending, but not as much as foreign rivals

Large companies based in the EU spent 4.7 per cent more on R&D in 2018 than 2017, but this increase was dwarfed by the growth in spending by companies in China and the United States, according to an annual EU assessment.

The 2019 Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, published on 18 December, revealed that large companies in the US increased their R&D spending by 10.3 per cent in 2018, while the equivalent figure for China was 26.7 per cent.
