A partial agreement has been reached on the EU’s proposed €13-billion military research programme, which now only needs formal approval from the European Parliament and Council.
The European Commission announced on 20 February that the three branches of government had reached agreement on some of the main areas of legislation for the European Defence Fund.
The EDF will allocate funds from the 2021-27 EU budget to develop prototype weapons and other military technologies. The areas agreed on include the decision to finance collaborative research projects, mainly through EU grants, while the cost of testing and prototype development will be shared with member states.
