Commission makes annual push on R&D spending

Every EU member state has been given pointers on research and innovation—and most of them urged to boost their investment—in the European Commission’s annual advice on economic growth.

Among the 32 policy areas covered, skills and research and innovation were the only ones that appeared in every member state’s package of recommendations, which were provided by the Commission on 5 June.

In its overarching summary, the Commission said that in many parts of Europe there remained “significant scope” to strengthen links between public research and small companies. It named Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania as states with particular room for improvement.
