The European Research Council has announced a €2.2-billion budget for 2020 that will enable it to significantly increase the number of Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants on offer.
The 2020 budget will support roughly 1,100 top researchers, and the council’s much sought-after grants for individual researchers will all increase in number and have larger total budgets. ERC grants are widely considered to be among the most prestigious funding available for researchers.
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, president of the ERC, expressed satisfaction with the budget, saying: “If Europe is serious about being a real powerhouse for science and innovation, major investment in research and innovation is needed, notably in blue-sky research via the European Research Council.”
