Europe ‘stands ready’ to research coronavirus, amid travel caution

EU ‘prepared’ to take on infectious disease, say commissioners

With eight people in Europe now confirmed to have contracted the deadly new strain of respiratory coronavirus that broke out in China in late 2019, EU commissioners have said the bloc stands ready to fight the disease.

Health commissioner Stella Kyriakides stressed the role of research in combating the spread of the virus, which has now killed at least 170 people among 7,711 cases in China—according to Chinese health authorities—and has so far spread to 15 other countries.
