Flagship AI lab would be ‘a waste’, researcher says

Ethics and privacy concerns also raised over Commission’s digital plans

A leading artificial intelligence researcher who supports a broad network of AI capacity has taken a dim view of a European Commission proposal to build a large, central laboratory to act as a global ‘lighthouse’ for the field.

“Machine learning and AI are a very distributed endeavour,” said Max Welling, co-founder of AI researcher association the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems Society.
