‘Radical change’ to base industry policy on R&D ecosystems

Commission wants to bolster businesses through better links with academia

The European Commission has presented a new industrial strategy for the EU, aiming to improve businesses’ links with academia in “alliances” and “ecosystems” to better equip them for global competition, digitalisation and climate change.

“Managing the green and digital transitions and avoiding external dependencies in a new geopolitical context requires radical change—and it needs to start now,” EU internal market commissioner Thierry Breton (pictured) said when presenting the strategy on 10 March.
