Prizes include money and recognition for women innovators and research with impact

The city of Leuven was named the 2020 European Capital of Innovation at the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Days conference on 24 September, alongside the awarding of a multitude of prizes intended to reward achievements in European R&D and raise awareness of its successes and importance.

The municipality won a €1 million prize funded by Horizon 2020, the EU R&D programme, for its “excellent innovation concepts”. These include its climate transition strategy, which involves governments, citizens and companies, and a platform to connect in-need residents with volunteers.
