Green light for public splurge comes with promise of private investment and societal benefits
A group of 12 EU member states has been given permission to award €2.9 billion of public funds to support battery R&D, after the European Commission decided that such support should be allowed under EU state aid rules.
The Commission announced on 26 January that it had approved a second “important project of common European interest” on battery R&D, called European Battery Innovation, involving Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.
