MEPs call for more EU investment in artificial intelligence research

Parliamentary committee lays out recommendations for the EU to catch up with global competitors

The EU should increase its investment in artificial intelligence research as part of its efforts to catch up in the global competition for technology leadership, according to a report from a special European Parliament committee.

While the EU has been increasing its funding for AI research and innovation in recent years, Europe’s AI spending still lags behind that of the United States and China. In 2021 the European Investment Bank found that the EU attracts only 7 per cent of global AI investment.
