EMA extends Covid emergency taskforce for monkeypox

Composition of European Medicines Agency taskforce will be reviewed so it can advise on countermeasures

The European Medicines Agency is extending the remit of an emergency taskforce it set up for the Covid-19 pandemic, to help it respond to the global monkeypox outbreak.

The move follows the designation of the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization—the highest level of alert that the UN health body can set.

The taskforce was already due to discuss treatments and vaccines for monkeypox, the agency said on 27 July. Now the composition of the group will be reviewed to ensure it has relevant expertise, the EMA announced.

Tasks will include providing scientific advice on medical products that could have a role in tackling the outbreak.

“Of particular importance is the need to give advice on clinical trial protocols,” the EMA said.
