European Commission proposals on patents deemed essential for modern technologies could hinder R&D and be bad for consumers, warn research and industry leaders.

Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) protect innovations related to technical standards in areas including 5G mobile communications, digital audio formats and WiFi.
