UK nominates Cambridge particle physicist Mark Thomson to lead European organisation for nuclear research

The competition to determine the future leader of Cern, the European organisation for nuclear research, has kicked off among its member countries.

University of Cambridge particle physicist Mark Thomson (pictured) was nominated to become Cern’s next director-general by the UK government on 2 April. Italian Fabiola Gianotti has been in the role for two terms, starting in 2016.
