Science student numbers rise strongly

The number of students entering first-year science programmes in the universities and institutes has risen by more than a third over the past five years, from 4,800 to 6,000, according to Higher Education Authority figures released on 2 January.

Figures covered the physical sciences, life sciences, maths and computing, but did not include those undertaking engineering degrees.
