The Teachers Union of Ireland has warned that research capabilities in institutes of technology could be damaged by the fall in lecturer numbers caused by cutbacks and a rise in student numbers.
The issue could provide a barrier to new scientific research, said the union, which represents 3,500 lecturers based at the institutes.
