The Science Foundation Ireland’s researcher of the year 2013 is Fergus Shanahan of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre at University College Cork.
The award was announced on 4 November at the annual SFI Science Summit.
Shanahan is director of the centre and is an internationally ranked expert in gastrointestinal research. He studies how intestinal bacteria influence health and disease and how the bacterial mix can drive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.
