Development of Ireland’s marine potential could create up to 10,000 jobs between now and 2020, says the latest report from the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs.
Launched on 1 May, the report shows that research-driven activity could account for a substantial number of these jobs, including jobs in food research, marine biotechnology and bioprocessing, and hi-tech marine products and services.
More than 16,000 people are employed in all facets of the maritime economy, says the report, but it notes that there is a lack of awareness about potential careers in the sector for engineers, marine biologists, maritime lawyers and environmental scientists.
