Irish health research funders seek early public involvement

Two Irish funding bodies have launched a €1.75-million research initiative to encourage the early involvement of the public in the health research process.

The Health Research Board and the Irish Research Council announced the PPI (Public and Patient Involvement) Ignite funding scheme on 30 May, and named five projects in five universities as the initial beneficiaries of the funding.

No one has more to gain from health research than the patient so it makes sense to involve the public in health research at the very earliest stage, said HRB head Máiread O’Driscoll.
