Irish institute awards medal to German scientist

German scientist Christian Spiering has won the 2017 O’Ceallaigh medal, awarded by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies to a world-leading astroparticle physicist.

Spiering is based at DESY-Zeuthen near Berlin and the award was presented on 13 July at the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Busan, South Korea. He is a specialist in cosmic rays and neutrinos.

First awarded in 1999, the medal celebrates the work of leading Irish physicist Cormac O’Ceallaigh, who worked on particle physics and then the study of cosmic rays.  He worked at the institute from 1953 to 1984.
