Former EU commissioner joins Science Foundation Ireland

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, a former EU research commissioner, has joined the board of funding body Science Foundation Ireland.

Skills minister John Halligan announced Geoghegan-Quinn’s appointment on 24 April, saying she would bring a wealth of experience to the position. The choice was also welcomed by SFI board chairwoman Ann Riordan, who said Geoghegan-Quinn would help leverage international advantage in areas where Ireland has research strengths.

Geoghegan-Quinn served as commissioner from 2010 to 2014 and played a key role in the set-up of Horizon 2020, work which the French government rewarded with a Légion d’Honneur.
